Alive for Too Long

The motorway is deserted, save for a little boy. A little boy, skating on rollerblades in the middle lane. His arms are swinging at his sides and he’s looking around, wondering. The noise barriers have coloured green because of the lack of cleaning. Plants have grown over the sides and onto the road, their roots making way in the asphalt. And the boy is still rollerblading.

There are no lost cars on the side of the road, not even on the viaducts above the motorway. The sun reflects on the boys blonde head, and his blue shirt and champagne coloured shorts are making quite the contrast with the road. He keeps rollerblading over cracks and bumps in the road from where the roots of the plants are appearing above ground. He’s skating like it has always been this way. Like he has always been the only one, the only innocent one. Maybe that’s it, his innocence. He doesn’t know, and he doesn’t need to find out.

Suddenly, a mouse starts running next to him. He looks down but doesn’t stop skating, and he greets him. The mouse is a light grey and has a comic book like appearance. The boy raises his hand to his head and salutes the mouse. The mouse nods his head and runs next to him. Whenever the boy comes too close with his blades, the mouse jumps aside gracefully. Every time the boy passes a viaduct more mice follow the boy and his companion. Then birds start flying over his head, and dogs and cats appear. All the animals run alongside each other, but they never run in front of the boy. The boy skates in front of his animal followers, looking straight ahead. He skates like it has never been different. He skates as if he is their leader, and maybe he is.
