Keep rewinding until you crash.

Thinking that you are always wrong, that you are not doing what you're supposed to do. You look back and you see that you should have done it differently. Assuming you haven't done it the right way, assuming that you must have made a mistake. You took the wrong turn at the wrong fork. You always did everything wrong, didn't you?

Before you read this, you should watch the video. Otherwise, you won't know what I'm talking about. I could try to explain, but it is much more powerful if you watch it yourself. Summed up, it is a man who is driving in a car. But in reverse. Beware, this video is not frightening, but it can be a bit scary.

Why do we humans have the tendency to keep looking back at the mistakes we made in the past? Why do we keep bringing things up that should have been long forgotten? Why do we live in a society in which we either think about the past, or dream about the future? We forget that there is something that is called Now. And Now, is good. You can do anything you want Now, something you might not be able to do tomorrow.

Living in the present is one of the most difficult things to do, at least I believe so. You cannot change anything about what has happened, but we find it so terribly comforting to look at the things we did, because that way we won't have to face the challenges that today brings us. It is a way of hiding in plain sight, isn't it? I've done it, and of course, sometimes I still do. But when I notice, I come back to myself and look at the situation as if that past never happened. The video is a good metaphor:

Stuck in something you don't have control over: the car. Why can't you control it? Because you are bound: the fact that you can't change what has happened. With a mask on: because you are afraid to look at the present. Watch the video, watch how it ends, then you'll know the outcome of such behaviour.

Quotes:

A man cannot free himself from the past more easily than he can from his own body.
André Maurois

Bring the past only if you are going to build from it.
Doménico Cieri Estrada

What you need to know about the past is that no matter what has happened, it has all worked together to bring you to this very moment.  And this is the moment you can choose to make everything new.  Right now.
